South West Quilters Retreat – Beer, Devon 2009

Can you think of anything better to do at the end of a gloomy January than be away for a week just sewing?

If you think that is a dream then think again and enjoy these photographs of the retreat which took place in Beer, Devon, in January 2009.I was lucky enough to be asked to teach the “Revelation Burning” technique in relation to making our own “Tiffany Style” lamps and the collection of the ladies’ work at the end of the week was inspirational.

The Retreat has become an annual event and is just what us quilters need after the hectic Christmas preparations, busy New Year and then the descent into the gloom of January.

Beer is a lovely, unspoilt, fishing village, blessed with a temperate climate, some excellent eateries and wonderful beach walks. We had a mixed bag of weather but the free-time half day was gloriously sunny and perfect weather for beach combing for those bits of drift wood which might just come in handy for a project later!

Everyone worked really hard and created their own interpretation of a “Tiffany Lamp” with an unusual decorated base. Of course no two projects were the same and that was the thrill of it all because we all learned something from each other.

An enjoyable week to kick-start the creativity in 2009!

Making progress, this is Sarah’s lamp number one of a pair! Note the communal bag of Minstrels chocolate which was an added reason to admire Sarah’s lamp!

The results of a busy week’s work but don’t they look fabulous? It was a fun week with good company, good food and a more than satisfactory end product.I hope the lamps will continue to shine and be a happy reminder of Beer Retreat 2009.
